Un moteur de recherche traditionnel indexe une quantité phénoménale de pages web. Si on prend l'exemple de Google, le plus populaire d'entre eux, ce sont plus de trois milliards d'URL qui sont indexées. Les moteurs que sont Hotbot, Lycos Ou Msn search, yahoo search pour ne citer qu'eux, ont également en mémoire une somme d'adresses, là encore, très impressionnante.
Imaginez maintenant un outil un outil qui ordonnerait à ces moteurs traditionnels de rechercher simultanément des pages en rapport avec une requête unique. C'est cet outil que l'on appelle un métamoteur, ou encore metacrawler. Son fonctionnement est simple : l'internaute entre une requête dans un champ approprié, puis clique sur un bouton pour lancer la recherche.
Le métamoteur interroge les moteurs qui lui sont attachés; chacun d'eux travaille de son coté, puis fournit ses propres résultats de recherche. A charge ensuite pour métamoteur ( franceevasion, kartoo, seek) de publier les résultats à sa guise. Au final, la recherche initiale n'en est que plus approfondie.
